Impactful financial planning has little to do with numbers. The numbers are part of the story, the numbers only matter because of the story.
It’s striking how little numbers and products are discussed in our client meetings. The reason is that clients don’t relate to them.
They relate to life, experiences, hopes and fears, so that’s where our conversations sit.
It’s taken for granted we know our onions and we’re competent and honest. We don’t need to prove anything in that regard.
But, in the same way as we need regular vitamin C top ups, our hopes and expectations of life need to be regularly talked about and addressed. Reassurance must be dispensed regularly.
If products, numbers and investment returns make up the majority of your conversations with your advisers isn’t a more important and impactful use of your time is being missed?
If you are being assailed with stats and blinded by financial science wonder why. Why don’t they want to talk about you?
In the end we are working with humans, humanity and their lives; money and numbers should be merely a tool to support them, not the main topic of discussion.
