Sisyphean
Great word isn’t it?
I heard it on “Killing Eve”, a quite enjoyable BBC series.
It’s an adjective that “denotes or relates to a task that can never be completed”. It stems Greek mythology – Sisyphus and his never ending efforts to roll an immense boulder uphill.
Humans engage is a sisyphean tasks don’t they?
Some of them fruitful – raising children, for example.
Others not so – looking for happiness in objects, for example.
Perhaps we would do well to audit our behaviour through a sisyphean filter?
We might be surprised what we give up doing once we realise how fruitless it is.
