TCFP35: Odysseus and the Sirens

by | Oct 31, 2018 | General News, Investment News

Odysseus was out and about in his boat one day as Greek heroes are prone to be. He’d been hearing a lot about the Sirens and was curious to find out more.

He knew they were dangerous creatures, who lured nearby sailors with their enchanting music and singing voices to shipwreck on the rocky coast of their island.

He wanted to hear what all the fuss was about so he came up with a plan.

As he approached their island, Odysseus ordered his men to fill their ears with beeswax. He had them bind him to the mast of his ship and gave them orders not to release him under any circumstances.

Only he hears their songs, promising to reveal the future. The Sirens’ songs are so seductive that Odysseus begs to be released, but his men bind him tighter.

In time they pass out of earshot with no damage done, and onto their next adventure. This will make a great book one day, Odysseus thought…..

Fast forward some 3,200 years. It’s the media and their cohorts of talking heads that are the Sirens. The songs they sing are every bit as enchanting and pervasive. They can get to us so much easier than the Sirens of old.

You need to be doubly aware, therefore, that you don’t find ourselves on the rocks. Off course, with your carefully crafted financial plan and investment strategy in tatters.

You’ll be faced with an epic struggle to get back on course, if you can at all. When you write it up, it’ll make the Iliad read like Jack and Jill going up a hill.

But help is at hand. We are your friend, lashing you to the mast and the rope we use is investment diversification.

We’re here by your side, helping you resist those enchanting songs and stay on course.

And we always will be; those songs are never going to stop.
