TCFP33: Brexit and uncertainty….

by | Aug 22, 2018 | General News

Hands up if you’re looking forward to the day when the deal (or no deal) is finally done?

There’s not long to go now and what a blessed relief it will be to turn our attention to President Trump’s romp to re-election.

Although, I’d be tempted to put the dogs’ monthly food allowance (a sum incomprehensibly larger than it should be) on him NOT putting himself forward. Not that I think that’s likely, it’s just more likely than him being beaten in my opinion.

I might have digressed…. let’s get back to Brexit and uncertainty.

Uncertainty always exists unless you have a crystal ball. Even then can you, would you ever put 100% faith in it? And if the answer to that is “yes” then what are you doing reading this and why aren’t you as rich (financially or spiritually) as Croesus?

Brexit is an excellent lightening rod, it can be blamed for anything and everything especially the uncertain feelings we have (which distinguish us as humans).

It’s been a relentless barrage for two years now. Reports come out every day, each seemingly trying to out-do the other with their forecasts. Uncertainty existed pre-Brexit and will do so post-Brexit.

To say we live in uncertain times is perhaps the biggest statement of the obvious there is. Like saying we live in an age of gravity.

When weren’t times uncertain or, better yet, when were they certain?

Uncertainty has existed for everyone, everywhere, forever whether they are in the EU or not. The EU has not meant less uncertainty. Ask the Greeks.

Of course, all of that is complete conjecture – we can’t possibly compare continuing in the EU with leaving. We can’t run the two in parallel.

Lots of things will change post-Brexit, the big news is that lots of things were going to change anyway. I don’t know what or when, but things are always changing. What will be will be.

For example, 12 years ago there wasn’t an iPhone, now more than 2 billion of us have smart ‘phones.

So, please, take any and all forecasts with a massive pinch of salt. Regardless of their credentials they are little more than guesses.

Educated guesses they may be but guesses all the same. Their crystal balls are no better than your own.
